Free · Native · Open source

The Twitch desktop app that does more than the website.

Twitch retired its official desktop app in 2022. StreamRift picks up where it left off: a free, native Twitch client for macOS and Windows that plays up to four streams at once with full chat, emotes, and local recording - no browser, no tabs, no web player.

Why native

A real app, not a wrapped browser.

StreamRift is built with Tauri 2 and Rust and plays Twitch's raw HLS stream in a native video element with GPU decode.

Four streams, one window

Five grid layouts, drag-to-resize dividers, and per-pane audio and quality. Hot-swap the sound between panes with the number keys.

Native HLS playback

The Twitch web player is never loaded. Direct m3u8 playback means lower overhead than a browser tab - especially with four streams running.

Full Twitch chat

Real chat over TMI with badges, BTTV & 7TV emotes, whispers, and mod commands. Everything you'd do on twitch.tv, in a native pane.

Local recording

Save any stream to disk at source quality - no re-encode, no cloud, no expiring VOD timer. Record two panes at once if you want.

Grid pop-out

Send the whole multiview to a frameless always-on-top window on your second monitor while chat stays on your main screen.

Kick, too

StreamRift is also a Kick desktop app - mix Twitch and Kick channels in the same grid with one sign-in per platform.

FAQ

Twitch desktop app questions, answered.

Is there an official Twitch desktop app?
Not anymore. Twitch retired its official desktop app back in 2022 and now points everyone to the website or mobile apps. StreamRift is an independent, open-source desktop client that fills that gap - a real native app for macOS and Windows, not a wrapped web page.
Is StreamRift free?
Completely. Free to download, free to use, MIT licensed, no account with us, no ads of our own, no telemetry. There's a tip jar if you want to support development, but nothing is paywalled.
Does it run on both Mac and Windows?
Yes. macOS builds are universal (Apple silicon and Intel) and Windows builds are x64. Public macOS builds are Apple-notarized. A Linux build isn't shipped today.
Does Twitch chat fully work?
Yes - real Twitch chat over TMI, not a scraped feed. Badges, colored names, BTTV & 7TV emotes, reply threads, whispers, and mod actions like /ban and /timeout all work the way they do on twitch.tv.
Is a third-party Twitch app safe to use?
StreamRift signs you in with Twitch's standard OAuth 2.0 flow in your own browser - no password ever touches the app - and stores the token in your OS keychain. It only reads the same public streams Twitch serves any browser.
Why use a desktop app instead of twitch.tv in a browser?
Native HLS playback with GPU decode instead of a heavy web player, up to four streams in one window, per-pane audio and quality, local recording to disk, grid pop-out for a second monitor, and keyboard shortcuts for everything. Browser tabs can't do any of that.
